Wounded Heart: Lakota Health Care Crisis on Pine Ridge
On the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Located in Shannon County - the poorest county in the United States, Native Americans die younger and get sicker than other Americans. One in three Indians, ages 45 -74 have diabetes and many are dying prematurely of heart disease.

Oliver Tuthill Visits Wounded Knee Memorial
Recently House Minority Leader and South Dakota Senator Tom Daschle's $292,000,000 amendment for the Indian Health Service met with defeat. (The original amendment called for 2.9 billion) Daschle said Indian Health Service clinical services per capita spending of $1,914 is about half of the $3,800 the government pays for the health care for federal prisoners.
This is not only an Indian issue. It affects surrounding rural community hospitals, ambulance services, and other health care providers who work with the Indian Health Services. Children of both whites and Indians are suffering.
Tuthill believes this is an important story that needs to be told. On his September visit to South Dakota he met with Senator Daschle and spent time on Pine Ridge where he had the opportunity to meet with the Lakota and visit surrounding communities including a visit to Wounded Knee Cemetery.
"I'm not trying to go after anybody," Tuthill explains. "I simply want all sides to share their stories and the problems they are encountering, as well as success stories of the Indian Health Service.
"Children and adults are suffering and all Americans deserve good medical care, especially those least able to care for themselves. I am hoping people will see this film and ask how they can help bring good health care to everybody, whites and Indians on Pine Ridge as well as the Cheyenne River and Sisseton Reservations."
The film is scheduled to go into production in April of 2004 with the production office located in Kyle, South Dakota centered in the Middle of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
